Iridium is used as a building block in a variety of supramolecular and organometallic compounds due to its ability to form complexes with a number of ligands. Herein we give an overview of the most significant developments in the field of iridium catalyzed supramolecular chemistry with a particular emphasis on the design of homogeneous catalysts. This review is organized in three sections. The first part covers heterogeneous organometallic catalysts and supramolecular metal-ligand assemblies. The second part deals with homogeneous catalysts using a transition metal-ligand couple and organometallic species.
